Disclosure: we make Phonics Bear. This comparison uses the products’ official descriptions and US store listings, rather than a hands-on test. It does not establish that either app teaches children faster or produces better reading outcomes.
The main choice is a flashcard-led practice format versus a monster adventure. If you want a free computer option, Teach Your Monster to Read is worth looking at first. If you want to revisit sounds and blending on an iPhone, Phonics Bear is another option.

What kind of practice are you looking for?
Phonics Bear’s flashcard format centres on revisiting letter sounds and bringing sounds together into words. Teach Your Monster presents reading tasks within a game journey. Its published stages extend into sentence reading and comprehension.
Both describe progress and personalised or targeted practice. Those features alone are not a unique reason to choose Phonics Bear. The format your child wants to return to, and the sounds being taught at school, are more useful questions to explore.
Cost: keep browser access and mobile plans separate
You can start with Phonics Bear’s free flashcards and choose Gold for its additional features. See the free and Gold plans; check the price and renewal terms presented in your Apple account before subscribing.
Teach Your Monster says its website games are free. The US iOS listing checked on October 7 showed $8.99 and described no in-app purchases. That snapshot is not a promise of permanent pricing.
Teach Your Monster’s mobile access is changing. Its May 21, 2026 transition notice announces a new subscription-based app later in 2026 and free access for prior purchasers. We have not verified the rollout, subscription price or how prior-purchase eligibility works for your account. Check the version, storefront and actual offer before downloading or updating. Do not assume every store or user has moved to the same plan.
Which might fit your family?
- Want a free route on a computer? Start by exploring Teach Your Monster’s website.
- Want an adventure with reading tasks? Look at Teach Your Monster’s stages and gameplay preview.
- Want flashcard-led sound and blending practice on iPhone? Explore Phonics Bear’s free resources before deciding whether Gold adds what you need.
- Already following a school phonics programme? Compare the sounds and word patterns in either product with what your child is learning. Ask their teacher if you are unsure where to begin.
These are suggestions based on the described formats, not results from testing children with both apps. Neither a subscription price nor a game format establishes teaching quality.
Three checks before you choose
- Open the current listing on the device you will use and confirm compatibility.
- Check what is available without paying, the exact purchase or subscription terms, and any trial offered to your account. We have not verified a Phonics Bear trial or its exact free phase boundaries.
- If travel or pronunciation is central to your decision, check the audio examples and offline requirements directly. We have not tested either released app offline or assessed its audio.
For practice you can try without choosing an app, use our free CVC word list and printable or blending guide.
