Disclosure: we make Phonics Bear. This comparison uses official product descriptions, support pages and US store listings, rather than a hands-on test. It does not establish that either product teaches children faster or produces better reading outcomes.

Hooked on Phonics is worth exploring if you want a sequence of activities and books, with the option of matching workbooks and storybooks delivered to your home. Phonics Bear is an option for focused letter-sound and blending practice. The key buying distinction is that Hooked’s app-only subscription and app-plus-mailed-materials plans are separate offers.

The differences at a glance

The table draws on the Bear listing, Hooked Apple listing, Hooked FAQ and learner guidance. Descriptions are product claims, not a comparison of children’s results.

Practice format and parent time

Bear’s free flashcards let you explore sound and blending practice. Its listing describes Gold’s adaptive practice, additional phonics phases and per-sound progress. Check the free and Gold explanation; precise free phase boundaries and a Bear trial have not been verified in the released app.

Hooked’s FAQ describes a supplemental sequence from Pre-reader alphabet work to Learn to Read words and stories, intended for ages 3–8 and approximately Pre-K through second grade. That scope is broader than individual practice cards, but it is not evidence that it replaces all reading instruction or suits every child in that age range.

The parent guidance suggests sitting together for around 10–15 minutes initially, adjusting to attention and readiness. It describes shared Pre-reader book reading and independent Learn to Read books. Adult participation is encouraged; it would be inaccurate to imply every activity requires a parent throughout. You can also alternate an app lesson and its workbook activity rather than doing both in one sitting. This is planning guidance, not a proven dose.

Compare app-only access with the right mailed plan

App-only access

The Apple description and Google Play description advertise seven days of app access, then an auto-renewing monthly subscription. A free download is not a promise of permanently free instruction. Confirm trial eligibility, the renewal date and cancellation route for your purchase channel.

Hooked’s US Apple purchase list includes monthly entries of $7.99, $12.99 and $14.99, and annual entries of $49.99 and $79.99. These multiple products do not establish one current new-customer price. We have not exercised checkout, and a definitive Google Play price was not exposed. Check the offer your account actually receives.

App plus mailed materials

The website pricing page advertised these US monthly bundles on October 9:

  • Complete Phonics: $11.98 for the first month, then $23.96/month.
  • Complete Phonics plus Practice Books: $14.97 initially, then $29.94/month; adds two decodable books each month.
  • Complete Phonics plus Math: $15.99 initially, then $31.99/month; adds physical math materials.

The base bundle already includes the digital phonics, spelling and math programmes, plus mailed phonics materials. The Math upgrade is not required just to access digital math. The page advertises free US shipping; taxes, region and the final account offer still need checking. Comparing that bundle price with Bear’s digital subscription as identical scope would be misleading.

For siblings, Hooked’s learner guidance distinguishes three digital profiles from one learner’s standard mailed pack. Extra physical packs cost more; three profiles do not mean three included workbooks.

An April 2026 signup article still mentions a $1 offer, while the pricing page displays a half-price first month. These are different advertised offers, not one settled trial. Use your actual offer and terms. The website’s 30-day guarantee describes cancellation and a requested signup-price refund; do not assume it governs a purchase billed by Apple or Google.

Device and offline checks before you subscribe

The current Apple pages list iOS 26 or later for Bear, and iOS/iPadOS 15 or later for Hooked. Bear is designed for iPhone; its listing marks Mac compatibility as unverified. Hooked has an Android listing too. Check the current store on the device you will use.

Hooked’s device guidance recommends Android 11+ and Fire OS 8+ with sufficient memory. Its iOS 14 wording conflicts with the newer Apple listing; prefer the current store requirement. The all-in-one app guidance says Mac and Microsoft Store downloads are no longer offered and recommends mobile devices. Treat this as a mobile-app choice, rather than assuming a current browser or desktop lesson option.

The Hooked FAQ on included features says downloaded lessons can be used offline. That is a useful advertised feature to check if connectivity matters. We have not tested it, and Bear’s released offline behaviour is unverified.

Which option might fit your family?

  • Need sound and blending practice on an iPhone? Explore Bear’s free cards before deciding whether guided Gold practice adds what you need.
  • Want a sequence with games, videos and books? Look at a Hooked sample lesson and the app-only offer. Physical materials are optional, not included in every app purchase.
  • Want workbooks and storybooks delivered? Consider the appropriate Hooked bundle, shipping availability and pack pacing. Check the additional cost for siblings.
  • Need a tablet or Android option? Check Hooked’s current device listing and memory guidance. Bear’s reviewed offer is designed for iPhone.

Choose around the task you need help with: revisiting familiar sound patterns, organising a sequence, or connecting digital practice with paper and books. Match the sequence to your child’s school instruction and allow time to read together. Features, price and activity counts do not establish which product will produce better outcomes.

If you are still working out the task, our blending guide explains one home-practice approach without requiring an app subscription.

Sources and limits

Sources checked October 9, 2026. Prices are US advertised observations, not exercised checkout totals or universal offers. We have not tested either released app’s audio, offline use, entitlements or learning outcomes. Marketing testimonials and a money-back policy do not establish a comparative learning result.
